National

His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam attended the Special BIMP-EAGA Summit, held at Shangri-La Mactan Resort, Cebu, 7th May afternoon. Accompanying His Majesty was His Royal Highness Prince 'Abdul Mateen.

At the Special Summit, His Majesty delivered a titah highlighting the current global uncertainties affecting energy markets, supply chains, and food systems. BIMP-EAGA has strong potential, given its rich natural resources and agricultural capacity, to contribute to regional stability and food security. Therefore, His Majesty stressed the need to deepen cooperation and enhance regional integration, particularly in food, energy, connectivity and logistics.

His Majesty underscored energy cooperation as a priority, including efforts to upgrade and interconnect power grids in rural and remote areas. It is also important to narrow the digital divide through expanded broadband connectivity to improve market access, increase efficiency, and drive innovation in rural economies.

In this regard, His Majesty encouraged the optimisation of reconfigured economic corridors to attract investments in food and energy and strengthen BIMP-EAGA's role as a reliable source of essential goods and services. In ending the titah, His Majesty reaffirmed support for the BIMP-EAGA Vision 2035 as a framework for resilient, inclusive, and sustainable growth, as well as emphasised the importance of establishing a fully operational Secretariat to ensure effective coordination and timely implementation of commitments. At the end of Special Summit, the Joint Statement of the Special Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) Summit 2026 was adopted.
